Sustainable, Affordable, Community Housing – the LILAC initiative…

Fran Lee from LILAC (Low Impact Living: Affordable housing: Community) in Leeds will be visiting Buckfastleigh to talk about the project and show a short film on Wed 22nd February, at 7.30pm in the Town Hall.

If you are interested in any aspect of sustainable or community housing, or in straw-bale building techniques, please come along. The talk will be followed by Questions & Answers/discussion and refreshments will be available. Price £2.00/£1.50.

Design-A-Logo Competition: The Results

Way back in July, we held our Annual General Meeting at Buckfastleigh Town Hall.

After reports by the Chairman and Treasurer, the following people were voted onto the committee for the next year:

Then, after refreshments we all took part in an open discussion on the subject of “Should we become Buckfastleigh Transition Town?”. After some very interesting discussion, the question was slightly altered to “Should Buck The Trend become a Transition Initiative?” and everyone present was in favour of this.

ReFurnish Opens Shop in Buckfastleigh

ReFurnish, that friendly community charity that sells secondhand furniture and household goods AND provides jobs for young people who need help to get into employment, has opened a new shop.

The new Buckfastleigh branch is actually a shop, unlike its larger warehouse-like cousins in Paignton, Newton Abbot, Ivybridge, Tavistock and Totnes – and it’s smack in the middle of the community, occupying the store next to the Co-op on Chapel Street.

As well as a great source of good quality, affordable furniture and electrical items, ReFurnish is also a good way of getting rid of unwanted items – especially those hard to dispose of white goods. Given the recent closure of Bulley Cleaves Recycling Centre, the timing could not be better!

ReFurnish regional manager David Banks said:

We will collect unwanted washing machines, fridges, freezers and so on free of charge – or they can be dropped off at any of our branches, Monday to Saturday.

All we ask is that they are in a reasonable cosmetic condition – we have full-time trained engineers working in Totnes and Newton Abbot, and two in Ivybridge, so we can fix any electrical or mechanical problems. All our electrical items are fully checked and approved before we sell them.

The only proviso is that you call them first:

Some breakdown can make repair uneconomic. If we have to write-off a washing machine, for example, we can re-use spare parts and sell the rest for scrap, but some fridges can sometimes just cost too much to repair and we have to pay to dispose of some non-recyclable components.

This is a great opportunity for us to re-use and recycle furniture and household goods at a truly local scale, and we encourage everyone to make full use of the services that ReFurnish provide.
