  • Library update

Posted on October 27th, 2014 andy No comments

Devon County Council have proposed new plans for the restructuring of the county’s libraries. You can see the details here.

The good news is that within the plan, the libraries will continue to be run by paid staff rather than being dumped on volunteers (though volunteers will be encouraged to join in and increase the amount of services provided). The bad news is that the library service would leave the public sector and be subcontracted by the council to a new, separate organisation – a charitable mutual society – and they still aim to cut the service by the same  amount.  This move would save some cash through charity tax breaks, but the rest would still have to be found in other ways.

The council are stating that this shows how they are listening to the public response – the consultation process produced masses of feedback, but neglect to say that they chose to drop their original proposal of staffing the libraries with volunteers, after Suffolk council, who were planning the same thing, dropped their plans due to the threat of legal action.   It was Suffolk council that then came up with this alternative model which has yet to be proven.

The plan is to set up 10 libraries around the county as pilot schemes  to find out what will bring in the cuts they need and still provide a service.

  • Save Devon’s Libraries – Rally at County Hall, Wednesday 8th Oct

    Save Devon’s Libraries – Rally
On Wednesday 8th October at 10:00am
Under the arches – Daw Room, County Hall, Exeter

Devon County Council Cabinet meets on Wednesday 8 October to decide the future of the county’s libraries – as you may know, their current proposal is to slash funding by 50% to 28* out of the 50 Devon branches – which would mean they can only stay open if volunteers can be found to run them.

  • Global Climate Change Day of Action – Sun 21st September

Posted on September 17th, 2014 andy No comments

The NATO summit on climate change begins on Monday 22nd September in New York. All around the world, individuals and organisations are organising and planning action on a massive scale to show the world’s leaders that this is the biggest issue in the world right now, and they need to stop fracking around and start dealing with it!

Like most of us, I can’t get to NY for the People’s Climate March – the biggest climate change march ever, and I can’t even get to London, Paris, Berlin or any of the other big marches planned (though if you are going to one of these and want to team up to travel, get in touch and I’ll pass it on info@buckthetrend.info).
But I still want to make my voice heard, and so do many, many others. So smaller actions are springing up everywhere, in Newton Abbot, Ashburton and Totnes. I and a bunch of other’s are planning to go to the Totnes rally, which is at midday outside the civic centre. To get there, some of us want to travel by the most appropriate form of transport we can – bicycle.

We will be meeting at 10.45 outside the Seed on Fore Street and then cycling (slowly) to Totnes. Why not get your bike out and join us? wear hi-viz and stick a sign on your back so people know what your about and why it is important to you.

cyclist_clipIf you can’t manage the ride, then come along and meet up outside the Seed to share transport.

Tell your friends and come along…

There is no bigger cause in the world right now – and the politicians are not going to do on their own – unless we make them!

Posted on April 28th, 2014 andy No comments

Devon Libraries Mass Closure is on the cards…
