    (1) GREEN COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME

First, some fantastic news – Buck the Trend has won a competition to take part in a Green Communities programme run by the Energy Saving Trust (EST). We have been selected from communities across Devon to work with an EST staff member to develop an initial carbon reduction plan for our town. This is wonderful news! It validates all the hard work we’ve done so far, and it means we can move on to the next stage of developing specific projects with professional support and resources. We’re still brainstorming ideas for the programme and would really welcome your input so get in touch if you’d like to take part in this process.

See http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/cafe for more info on the Green Communities programme.

    (2) CYCLE PATH CAMPAIGN

The campaign to get the cycle path extended from Dartington to Buckfastleigh is ramping up its work in the next few months and your support at this time is crucial. Campaigners are asking as many people as possible to email Lester Willmington in the Transport Department of Devon County Council – lester.willmington@devon.gov.uk – and to ask him to support the extension of the cycle path.

Your help is also needed on Fore Street in October, as BTT supporter Tom Towey is organising a stall to publicise the cycle path campaign and to ask people to sign letters of support. Please contact Tom if you could spare any time to help on the 10th or 17th October. Tom’s email is tomtowey1@hotmail.com

    (3) RETROFIT FOR THE FUTURE

BTT supporter Andy Stokes lives in one of three local houses put forward for a scheme to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent. Andy says:

“Our Housing Association, Sovereign, contacted us earlier in the summer to see if we would be happy if they put forward our house, and the two neighbouring houses in Buckfastleigh that they own – of course we said yes! We are well aware not only that we need to do whatever we can to stop global warming, but also that fuel is going to get scarcer and more expensive as the world’s oil supplies are rapidly being diminished. This project is an exciting opportunity to learn about the solutions to these problems, and also make ourselves more aware of our energy wastage and what we can change to help.”

The scheme is called ‘Retrofit for the Future’ and Andy is blogging about it on the Buck the Trend website. It makes interesting reading for anyone keen to save energy and cut carbon emissions in homes or workplaces.

    (4) CHAIRPERSON NEEDED

We need one! Clare, BTT’s Chair for the last year, has resigned due to other commitments. Clare has done a fantastic job – from doing the plant and seed exchange, to rabble-rousing for raffle tickets at Lamb Pie Day, to organising Forums and inputting at meetings – her skills have been many and her company always a joy. We’d like to thank her for all her excellent work.

We now need someone else to take up this role. Don’t be intimidated by Clare’s work – you can adapt the post to suit your availability and skills and you’ll be working with a supportive and flexible committee. If you are interested (and please don’t be shy as we need to fill the post) then email back or call Mel for more info on 642656.

    (5) LOW CARBON FESTIVAL*

The Dartmoor and Exmoor Low Carbon Festival takes place from the 9th – 12th October and a host of events are planned, including a tour of renewable energy sites on Dartmoor. For more info see www.lowcarbonfestival.co.uk

    (6) NEXT BTT FORUM This takes place at 7.30pm at the Town Hall on Monday 12th October and will feature a presentation from Teignbridge’s Recycling Officer. As usual, all welcome!
