We will be showing the film ‘The Power of Community – How Cuba survived Peak oil’ at the Town Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 15th October.

The Power of CommunityThis film looks at how the Cuban people survived when the Soviet Union collapsed and their economy was devestated almost overnight.

It is an inspirational and positive film about how a community can respond and succeed in the face of such a challenge, and presents an experience we might be able to learn from.

Because of the long-term total embargo of Cuba by the US, it was almost entirely dependent on the Soviet Union for anything it could not produce. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba lost most of it’s imports of oil, food and goods, and had to find a way of supporting it’s people without access to chemicals and with a desperate shortage of energy and machinery.

This is the story of how they responded – by growing food organically in every available green space, by sharing skills and working together.

You are invited to stay after the film for a cup of tea and a discussion about how we may cope with increasing scarcity and rising cost of energy and food imports.

Admission is free, but we would welcome donations towards the cost of room hire etc.
